It is a city built on hills, ridgelines, and narrow valleys — with prevailing winds that regularly top 100 km/h and streets that were laid out long before scaffolding trucks existed. Any scaffolding company quoting in Wellington without accounting for these factors is handing you an unrealistic number.
The three variables that most affect Wellington scaffolding pricing and complexity are:
Terrain. A steep section in Karori or Khandallah requires extended base jacks, additional sole boards, extra bracing, and more time to erect safely than the same house on a flat section in Miramar.

Thorndon
Thorndon is one of Wellington's oldest and most architecturally varied suburbs. Two and three-storey villas, townhouses, and heritage properties are common. Street access on streets like Glenmore, Tinakori Road, and the terrace rows is tight — scaffolding trucks need to be positioned carefully and equipment may need to be carried to the section. Expect scaffolding pricing to include an access allowance. WorkSafe NZ compliance here often means extended scaffolding on heritage facades.
Kelburn
Kelburn's hillside sections drop sharply from the street — the scaffolding base often needs to be set on sloped ground well below the street level. Extended base jacks, long sole boards, and additional bracing to the structure are standard. The benefit: views. The cost: added erect time and complexity. Budget $200–$400 above a flat-section equivalent.
Aro Valley
Narrow lanes, close-built houses, and steep terrain combine in Aro Valley. This suburb has some of Wellington's tightest access — driveways that barely fit a car, let alone a scaffolding truck. Small teams, manual carries, and tight scheduling with neighbours are the norm here. Erect It regularly works in Aro Valley and prices accordingly.
Mt Cook / Mt Victoria
Both suburbs mix steep hillside sections (especially heading up toward the ridge) with flatter, more accessible streets close to the CBD. Mt Victoria in particular has some tight right-of-way lanes in its older terrace rows. For properties on the ridge facing east, wind loading is significant.
Newtown
Newtown sits at moderate elevation and is generally more accessible than the inner hillside suburbs. Two-storey and three-storey houses dominate — standard perimeter scaffolding of $1,400–$2,200 is typical. Medical precinct proximity means commercial scaffolding work is also common here.

Eastern Suburbs
Miramar
Miramar is one of Wellington's most accessible suburbs for scaffolding — largely flat or gently sloping, with wide streets and easy truck access. It's also one of the windier suburbs, with Cook Strait exposure to the south. Standard pricing applies for most Miramar residential jobs, with wind bracing at standard specification. $800–$1,400 for a typical single-storey residential job.
Strathmore Park
Similar to Miramar in terms of accessibility. Rolling terrain with some steeper sections toward the southern edge. Strong southerly exposure means wind ties are important here.
Kilbirnie / Lyall Bay
Flat to gently sloping, generally accessible. The southern coastal exposure in Lyall Bay means wind loading should be specified correctly on every scaffolding. Lyall Bay bungalows are often single-storey, making pricing on the lower end.
Hataitai
Hataitai rises sharply from the waterfront. Streets in the upper parts of the suburb are narrow and the sections are sloped. Access to many Hataitai properties requires navigating tight corners. A step up in complexity from Kilbirnie or Miramar.
Roseneath / Oriental Bay
Hillside properties with outstanding harbour views and challenging access. Steep driveways, narrow streets above the waterfront, and two or three-storey homes are typical. Budget for hillside pricing with access allowances.
Seatoun
Largely accessible, open suburb. The coastal southern exposure creates wind considerations, but terrain complexity is lower than the western suburbs. Good access for scaffolding trucks.

Island Bay
Island Bay is generally accessible and at lower elevation. The southern coastline creates wind exposure, but most streets are straightforward. Good truck access. Typical residential pricing: $800–$1,400.
Berhampore

Brooklyn

Khandallah
Khandallah has some of Wellington's steepest residential sections. The area is popular with families but challenging for scaffolding — steep driveways, long carries from the truck, and significant elevation changes between street and the house are common. Hillside rates with a meaningful access allowance are typical.
Johnsonville
More recent suburban development than the inner city suburbs means better roading, wider streets, and easier access than Khandallah or Karori. Terrain is moderate. Good access for standard scaffolding trucks. Pricing is generally at the lower end of Wellington rates.
Churton Park / Woodridge
Modern suburban development, flat to gently rolling, excellent truck access. Some of Wellington's most straightforward scaffolding jobs. Prices for standard residential work are competitive.
Tawa
Tawa sits in a valley and is well-accessed. Good road width, moderate terrain, and easy truck positioning. A busy scaffolding suburb — new builds and renovations are common.
Wadestown / Northland
Both have hillside character with steep sections in some streets. Wadestown especially has access constraints similar to Thorndon above.
