What construction safety nets do
Construction safety nets are flexible, high-strength fall arrest systems installed beneath an open work area. Unlike a harness and lanyard, a correctly positioned net provides collective protection for everyone working above it, without tying each person to an anchor point. That makes it useful during timber framing, floor installation, stair construction, and roof truss work, when the building has openings that will later be enclosed. Nets also leave trades more freedom to move materials and work efficiently. They are not a substitute for planning: the net, its fixings, clearance below it, access, and rescue arrangements must all suit the structure and the work being done.
NZS 4994 and WorkSafe NZ requirements
NZS 4994 is the New Zealand standard covering the use of safety nets for fall protection. It addresses the selection, installation, positioning, inspection, and use of safety net systems. WorkSafe NZ’s fall-risk guidance also expects businesses to identify hazards and use the most effective reasonably practicable control. In practice, that means a builder should not simply order a net by size and assume it will be compliant. The fixing points, net position, possible fall distance, clearance, nearby hazards, and the sequence of work all need to be checked. Our riggers discuss those details with your site manager, install the system for the actual build, and provide site documentation once it has been checked.
When safety nets are needed on a new build
On a Kāpiti new build, the right time for safety net installation is before workers are exposed to the relevant internal fall risk. For a two-storey timber-frame house, that may be while the upper floor or roof structure is open. For a townhouse or multi-unit project, nets can be planned into each level and relocated as the framing sequence moves upwards. Early coordination matters because the structure must be ready for safe fixing, yet the protection needs to be installed before the high-risk task begins. We work from the site programme, plans, or a conversation with the foreman to schedule installation, inspections, relocations, and removal without delaying other trades.
Safety nets versus edge protection
Safety nets and edge protection are complementary controls rather than interchangeable products. A safety net catches a person who falls through an internal opening; edge protection uses guardrails and toe boards to prevent people or materials going over an exposed roof edge. A new build may need both: interior nets under a stairwell or upper floor and external edge protection around the roof perimeter. Full external residential scaffolding may also be needed where trades require a working platform, materials staging, or access to the outside walls.
