Do I legally need edge protection for a reroof in New Zealand?
Yes — under WorkSafe New Zealand's Working at Height guidelines, any roof work above 3 metres requires fall protection. For reroofing, this means compliant edge protection: guardrails, midrails and toe boards installed at the roof perimeter before your roofer starts. Most reputable roofers won't begin a job without it in place.
Is edge protection the same as scaffolding for a reroof?
For reroofing, edge protection is the correct product — not full scaffolding. Edge protection consists of compliant perimeter guardrails installed at eave level, which is all WorkSafe NZ requires for most residential reroof jobs. Full scaffolding (a complete platform system around the building) is used when trades need to work off the wall face, such as for recladding or window replacement. Reroofing just needs the perimeter protected.
How long does the edge protection need to stay up for a reroof?
Most residential reroofing jobs take 1–3 weeks. We charge a setup/dismantle fee plus a weekly hire rate, so you only pay for the time you actually need it. We can also remove in stages if part of the job finishes early.
Can I get edge protection for a roof painting job as well?
Absolutely. Edge protection is required for roof painting under WorkSafe rules, just as it is for reroofing. The setup is identical — Dhillon can quote both on the same call.
