This completed Ōtaki project used scaffold-supported temporary roof shrinkwrap to provide a covered work area for asbestos removal and installation of a new roof. Erect It supplied the scaffold and temporary roof system so the roofing work could proceed beneath a planned enclosure; the asbestos-removal and roofing tasks were carried out by the relevant project trades.

The aerial footage and photos show the temporary roof from several angles. They document one real job, not a standard layout or a design that can be copied without assessing another building.

Why use a temporary roof for this work?

Roof replacement can expose parts of a building while the old roof is removed and the new roof is prepared or installed. A scaffold-supported temporary roof can help limit weather exposure during that work and provide an enclosed working area. The scope, opening sequence and programme need to be discussed before the scaffold is planned.

Where asbestos removal is part of a project, the temporary roof and scaffold are only one part of the site arrangement. They do not replace asbestos assessment, the removal contractor’s controls, monitoring or clearance. Those responsibilities stay with the appropriately qualified asbestos professionals and project team.

Plan the scaffold and shrinkwrap as one system

Shrinkwrap changes how wind acts on a scaffold. The scaffold, temporary roof, ties, bracing, access and inspection arrangements need to be considered together for the actual building and site. The right setup depends on the roof shape, required coverage, ground and access conditions, and the trades’ work sequence.

For a similar project, provide the scaffolder with the site address, roof and building information, the areas to be opened, planned work stages, access constraints, and the expected hire period. Photos or drawings help begin the assessment, but the final arrangement needs to be confirmed for the site.
