What Are Construction Safety Nets?

Safety nets are a type of passive fall protection used on construction sites. Unlike edge protection (which prevents falls from the edge of a structure), safety nets are installed below or around work areas to catch workers or objects if a fall occurs.

They're commonly used for:

  • Timber framing on new residential builds
  • Roof work on large commercial or industrial buildings
  • High-access work where scaffolding or edge protection isn't practical
  • Sites where multiple trades are working at different heights simultaneously

Are Safety Nets Required by WorkSafe NZ?

Safety nets are one of several WorkSafe-approved fall protection methods. WorkSafe NZ's Working at Height guidelines require that any work above 3 metres has appropriate fall protection. Safety nets are a recognised and compliant method for achieving this.

For timber framers on new builds, safety nets are often the preferred method — they allow framers to work freely without the constraints of scaffolding, while still providing full fall protection.

Our Safety Net Standards

Every safety net we install undergoes rigorous testing to meet manufacturer specifications and NZ industry standards. Key factors we check:

  • Load capacity — Nets must withstand the energy of a falling worker plus a safety margin
  • Mesh size — Must prevent objects (tools, timber off-cuts) from passing through
  • Anchor points — Every anchor is checked for structural adequacy
  • UV degradation — Nets are inspected for UV damage and replaced if compromised
  • Clearance below — Sufficient drop clearance is confirmed before installation
