The Wellington Terrain Factor — Hillside Sections
Wellington is not a flat city. If your home sits on a hillside section in Khandallah, Karori, Kelburn, Mt Victoria, Aro Valley, Brooklyn, or any of the numerous elevated suburbs in between — your scaffolding will require a different setup to the same house on a flat Newlands section.
Extended base jacks are required when the ground level changes significantly across the scaffolding footprint. The base jacks extend and retract independently to level the scaffolding horizontally even when the ground underneath is sloping.
Sole boards are lengths of timber placed under the base jacks to spread the scaffolding load across soft or uneven ground. Wellington's clay soils can be unstable after rain, and sole boarding prevents base jacks from sinking or shifting.
